Portuguese online gambling revenue increases 82.8% year-on-year in Q1 2021

Portuguese national gambling regulator Serviço de Regulação Inspeção de Jogos (SRIJ) published data showing online gambling has increased by 82.8 per cent over the same period for last year from €70.2 million to €128.3 million.

Overall gambling revenue went up 1.9 per cent, up from €131.8 million to €134.3 million.

Big increases happened across the board for online gambling in Portugal with sports betting jumping 101.5 per cent to €69.5 million and sports wagering up by 184.1 per cent from €149.2 million to €423.8 million.

The trend continued with revenues from online casinos increasing 64.3 per cent to €58.8 million and wagered bets also setting record highs with €1.61 billion, an increase of 65.1 per cent.

Portuguese gamers favour online slots as their game of choice with 72.9 per cent of the market, followed by roulette then blackjack with 12.3 percent and 6.4 per cent, respectively.

New registrations more than doubled to 329,400 s in the first quarter with gamers choosing to self-exclude from online gambling rising 65 per cent from 51,000 in 2020 to 86,100 in Q1 2021.

With the pandemic enforcing a shut down of land-based casinos, revenues dropped 92.6 per cent to €812,750.
